How to Find a Good Guild

Alright, I thought I could use another nice meat post and I thought a guide to finding a guild would make a good subject. Until recently I had pretty bad luck with guilds and I had to be on the lookout a lot. Finding a guild that is looking for your class, spec, gear level, and fits your schedule is no easy task. So I come here to give you a few pointers on what resources I used and other tips.

1. Prepare your Character:

Make sure you log out in your raid gear and have your WWS ready. This is about 80% of what guilds look at to assess your skill level. Most don’t mind gear much, but will look at your armoury for enchants and gem choices. They will look at your spec as well so make sure all of those are up to snuff before guild searching

2. Survey the Sources:

Don’t just apply to every guild you can name. You want to find guilds that are looking for new members. Any decent guild will require you to apply. If you don’t want to spend the money on a transfer, check your realm forums or ask around in whispers to other guild leaders. If you want to have a better choice, you will most likely need to transfer. Here are a couple good sources I use for finding guild search postings:

The Official Forums: Alliance US Horde US this is a decent source, but it attracts all types of guilds. If you are looking for a guild with a peculiar time or for a casual, 10-man, or non-raiding guild you should check this out. One issue is there seems to be no such forums on the European version of the WoW forums. Check back often as these ads change up rather quickly.

Elitist Jerks Forums: Link this is a good source for finding a good top-end 25-man guild. These guilds have to pay to advertise on here so if you are looking for a serious guild, you should check this out if you consider yourself a “hardcore”.

Lookingforguild.net: Link this has been a reliable site in the past, but has in the last few months changed owners and has gone under some serious changes. I don’t know what to think anymore, but it is a decently popular site for guild recruitment. It has helped me in the past but keep in mind that was under older ownership.

WorldofRaids Forums: Link fairly decent. Worldofraids gets a similar group to elitistjerks, but you wont need to pay to advertise on here. This is a good source as well, but check back often as these ads are all over the place.

MMO-Champion Forums: US PvP US PvE EU English PvP EU English PvE EU German PvP EU German PvE EU French PvP EU French PvE MMO-Champion is known for being a good WoW news site, but I do not have any personal experience working with their guild recruitment forum. This seems like a good option if you want to find a German or French guild.

WoW Headhunter: Link this is in development, but boasts to be much more specific than any other recruiting site. They even get you to fill out a little test to determine your personality type and match you accordingly. So if you are interested in something peculiar in schedule or play style then check this out.

Wowraid: Link will likely replace WorldofRaids recruitment as they come from the same creator. This is a very well done site and you can find guilds looking for your exact class and spec. This site has a raiding slant.

If you know any other guild recruitment websites I didn’t mention be sure to email me in the sidebar and I’ll add it, or comment the source. I would like to find some decent ones for the Chinese, Russian, and Korean servers.

3. Do your application properly: WoW Insider made a good article about how to properly do a guild app. The link to this article is here.

4. Subscribe to the Threads: When you apply your app is normally in the form of a forum thread. Either use the feature to receive an email when there is a reply to the thread or bookmark all your applications. You can delete them from the list if you are denied.

5. Be Patient: One time I applied for guilds and took the first guild that said yes. They were 3/6 Sunwell and I was ecstatic. About two days later the 6/6 guild I applied to accepted me and I was just lucky the two guilds were on the same server. You might not be so lucky; so wait as long as you can to see what offers come through.

6. Keep Looking: Every day check the sources for new postings. You never know when a new golden opportunity will open up. Until I’m in a new guild I keep looking just in case.

These six points should help you in your search to find a good guild that needs your character and fits your playstyle. Remember that paying 25 dollars does not guarantee you a raid spot or even 100% chance to get past the applicant stage. Your first few weeks in the guild you need to dress for success and overcompensate to impress the brass. Good luck and happy hunting!
